Average cycle time is the four figures added together: one complete cycle from starting to read to being ready for the next question. Capacity is shown to one decimal; planned questions is that figure rounded down, because you cannot ask most of a question.

How the math works

  • Minutes left for question cycles = advertised window minus welcome, midpoint break, media blocks, final scoring and safety buffer. If that comes out at zero or below, the fixed segments have eaten the whole night.
  • Total booking window = setup + advertised window + pack-out. This is the figure to give the venue. The advertised window is what you tell players.
  • Average cycle time = read and repeat + discussion + submission and collection + transition, in seconds.
  • Suggested collection time is an explicit formula, not a hidden adjustment. Paper collected per question: 8 + 1.0 x teams seconds, because a runner has to visit every table. Paper collected per round: 4 + 0.3 x teams, because the walk is amortised over the whole round. Digital submission: a flat 5 seconds, because submissions arrive in parallel. The suggestion never overwrites your figure unless you press the button.
  • Mathematical capacity = minutes left for question cycles x 60, divided by the cycle time in seconds. Planned standard questions is that rounded down.
  • Total scorable answer units = planned standard questions + special-round scorable answers. Backup questions are excluded, since they are only used when something is thrown out.
  • Round options only appear where a split gives at least two full rounds. Leftover questions are the remainder, which you either drop or fold into a short final round.

A note on what this tool assumes

Every figure here is yours except the collection-time formulas, which are labelled above and can be ignored entirely. We do not publish a recommended question count or a standard round length, because the right answer for a 90-minute paper game with twenty teams is not the right answer for a two-hour digital game with six.

One warning worth repeating: if you measured your cycle time on a quiet night with fewer teams than you now expect, the real night will run longer than this page says. Measure again at the team count you are planning for.
