Trivia Host Script: Openings, Transitions and Common Situations

Keep your opening to 60–90 seconds. Explain only what players need before question one, and introduce wagers, special rounds and tiebreakers when they come up. A casual bar game can sound relaxed, a tournament needs precision, a digital game has to explain the answer app, and a fundraiser has to leave room for the organization. Use these scripts as building blocks and put them in your own words.

Before you begin

Fill in the venue and event name, number of rounds or end time, team-size rule, how answers are submitted, phone policy, scoring, prizes, dispute window and next game date. Opening 1: Friendly neighborhood bar trivia

Good evening, everyone, and welcome to trivia at [VENUE]. Please use the same team name on every answer.

I’ll read each question, give you time to talk and tell you when answers are due. Once an answer is submitted, it is final. Please keep phones and other reference devices away while a question is active, and do not call out answers.

Tonight we’ll play [FORMAT], and we expect to finish around [TIME]. The prizes are [PRIZES]. If you have a question about a ruling, bring it to me during the next break. Let’s get started.

Use when: the format is straightforward and most rules can fit in one minute.

Opening 2: Competitive or league trivia

Welcome to [EVENT/LEAGUE]. Confirm that your official team name or number is on every submission and that your team meets tonight’s roster limit of [NUMBER].

No outside materials or reference devices may be used during the game. Answers lock at [CUE]. Tonight’s scoring is [SUMMARY], and ties are decided by [METHOD].

Appeals must be raised during [WINDOW]. The host will make the in-game ruling using the published answer notes, and any documented editorial correction will be applied consistently. Good luck.

Opening 3: Digital-answer trivia

Welcome to trivia at [VENUE]. Open [ANSWER SITE/APP] and enter room code [CODE]. Use one device per team unless tonight’s instructions say otherwise.

You may use the approved answer screen, but no searching, messaging, voice assistants or other reference tools while a question is active. The timer locks each answer automatically, so submit before it reaches zero.

Make sure your team name is correct before question one. Tonight’s prizes are [PRIZES], and we expect to finish around [TIME].

Use when: phones are required for answers but prohibited as research tools.

Opening 4: Fundraiser or private event

Welcome to [EVENT], benefiting [ORGANIZATION/PURPOSE]. Thank you to [SPONSORS/VENUE] for making tonight possible.

Teams will play [FORMAT]. Please write your team name clearly on every answer and submit at [LOCATION/CUE]. Keep phones and outside resources away while a question is active.

We’ll pause at [TIME/ROUND] for [DINNER, RAFFLE OR PROGRAM]. Tonight’s prizes are [PRIZES]. Most importantly, have fun and help us support [PURPOSE].

Use when: trivia is one part of a larger event schedule.

Script for explaining a multiplier or Joker

You have one [JOKER/MULTIPLIER] to use tonight. Mark it on the round you want to multiply before [DEADLINE]. Once submitted, the choice is final. The multiplier does not apply to [EXCLUDED ROUNDS].

Script for question-by-question wagers

For this round, use each wager of [VALUES] once. Write the wager with the answer. A correct answer earns that value; a wrong answer [LOSES THE VALUE/EARNS ZERO]. An answer without a wager receives [DEFAULT RULE].

Short transition scripts

Starting a new round

That is the end of Round [NUMBER]. Scores are being updated now. Round [NEXT NUMBER] begins in approximately [TIME].

Announcing standings

After [NUMBER] rounds, the current top teams are [TEAMS]. The scores are close, and [POINTS/ROUNDS] remain.

Introducing a picture or audio round

This round works differently. You’ll receive [SHEET/CLIP] and have [TIME]. Each correct answer is worth [VALUE]. Please wait until I say begin.

Returning from a break

We’re starting again in two minutes. Please return your team to the table and make sure your next answer sheet is ready.

Phone and outside-help scripts

General reminder

Quick reminder: phones, smartwatches and outside reference tools need to stay away while the question is active. Step away from your team if you need to use one.

Private warning

I noticed a device being used during an active question. This is the team’s warning. Another incident will result in [NO CREDIT/PRIZE INELIGIBILITY/OTHER PUBLISHED PENALTY].

Dispute and correction scripts

Pause before ruling

Thank you for raising it. Let me check the exact wording and accepted-answer notes before I make the ruling.

Accepting another answer

That answer is supported by the wording, so I’m awarding credit to every affected team.

Keeping the original ruling

I reviewed the wording and notes. This question required [REQUIRED ANSWER], so [SUBMITTED ANSWER] does not receive credit. I’m recording the objection for editorial review.

Removing a flawed question

The question does not provide enough information for a fair ruling. It will not count for any team.

Correcting a score

I made a scoring error on [QUESTION/ROUND]. The affected scores have been corrected, and the updated standings are [STANDINGS].

A direct correction sounds more professional than a defensive one.

Late-team script

You’re welcome to join. Because the game is underway, your team will [START AT ZERO/JOIN AT THE NEXT ROUND/PLAY WITHOUT PRIZE ELIGIBILITY]. Please use the same team name on every answer.

Final-question script

Before I read the final question, confirm your score and write your wager of [RULE]. Once the wager is submitted, it is final. The final category is [CATEGORY, IF ANNOUNCED].

Tiebreaker script

We have a tie between [TEAMS]. The tiebreaker is closest to the correct number without [GOING OVER/ANY RESTRICTION, IF USED]. Write one answer and submit it when ready.

Closing script

Make it sound like you

Read it aloud beforehand and swap formal words for ones you actually use. Keep sentences short enough to hear in a noisy room, pause after the rule that matters most, and use the same rule wording every week. Skip jokes that embarrass or target players, and stop talking once the room knows what to do.
